"I'm just known as Z. People used to called me X as a joke at first, and gave me the name because I'm E's ex-girlfriend, but now I'm just Z. The last letter. The last resort. When things start going wrong, people call the Shadowslayers. When things CAN'T be allowed to go wrong, people call me."
— Z

Shadowslayer Z is one of the Shadowslayers, an order sworn to hunt the night and that mainly operates out of Darkovia, due to its prevalence of dark creatures.

History[]

Background[]

Prior to joining the Shadowslayers, Z used to be one of the Vampire Slayers, but left them due to feeling the need to fight other threats that were not only the vampires.[2]

As a Shadowslayer she received the name 'Z', as is tradition of the order to name their members after a letter. Still at the start of her new career she begun a romantic relatioship with her fellow Shadowslayer, E, but the two broke up and she became jokingly known as 'X', as a pun, due to being E's ex-girlfriend.[3] So Z became her moniker due to it being the last letter of the alphabet, just as she was the last restort and greatest fighter.[4]

Z prides herself as the best of the Shadowslayers[5] but is not blinded by that pride or a thirst for blood and is willing to work with others outside her organization and leave Darkovia for diplomatic missions, such as declaring membership of the Shadowslayers into the Alliance in exchange for funding from Swordhaven, and she refuses to put the innocent under needless danger if they can't defend themselves.[6]

Chaos Lord Wolfwing[]

On their way through the Darkovia Forest the Hero meets Z outside her tent by the road, with heads of garlic at the ready on a nearby tree. She warns the Hero not to go further and won't allow them inside Safiria's domain without them first proving themselves as capable of being a Shadowslayer.

She demands the Hero get an axe from Red Hunting Hood at Greenguard Forest and slay dire wolves and blood maggots in Darkovia to prove their skill until it is time to face the Lich of the Stone.[7]

With the Lich dead and the Hero's capabilities proved, Z tells them the story of Wolfwing the Werepyre before inducting them into the Shadowslayers and letting them pass to Safiria's castle. Z asks the Hero to talk to Safiria and the Werewolf King to negociate a truce so that together they may stop the werepyre threat before it destroys Darkovia, since they would never trust her after all the vampires and werewolves she killed.[8]

The Hero does as Z asked and requests, unfortunately, Safiria and the Werewolf King do not listen, and although the latter was replaced by Constantin who does worry about the Werepyre threat, he can not spare any help as he was busy fighting the vampires.

While the vampires and lycans warred for control of the Valley of Death, Z searched for Wolfwing and found him in the Chaos Cave, with a captive red dragon who he planned to turn into a Dracowerepyre and a Chaos Beast. She urges Safiria and Constantin to stop fighting each other and unite against the Werepyres before they exterminate the both of them. The two rivals finally agree to a temporary truce and march to war.[9] Z and the Hero go after Wolfwing in the Chaos Cave.

Inside the Chaos Cave, Z notices Wolfwing's tight security, with not only many minions, but also a metal hatch forbidding access to his inner lair to anyone who does not possess a special key[10] and know the Chaos magic password. After the Hero took the key from one of the guards and found out the password, thinning Werepyre numbers in the process, Z chants the words "Kwinthis Taleron Biy Salderos!" and the first step is completed.[11]

After the Hero opens the hatch's lock with the key, they descend further down the cave and fight the fifth Chaos Beast, the Dracowerepyre.[12] Z can not believe the Hero's skill, thinking they might be able to teach Shadowslayers a thing or two.[13] She tells the Hero to get Safiria and Constantin while she scouts ahead.

Silver Arrow

The silver arrow that felled Wolfwing.

After reaching the end of Wolfwing's inner sanctum, the Hero confronts the Chaos Lord and defeats him. Wolfwing weeps about only wanting a sense of belonging and indepently of the Hero's choice of either asking him to join them or asking him to stand up to be finished off, Z shoots him with a silver arrow, reducing him to dust. Z congratulates the Hero and shows no remorse upon being told of Wolfwing's feelings, thinking the world's better off without him.[14]

Darkovia Invasion[]

Alice in Chains[]

At the Alice in Chains concert Z once again asks the Hero's help, having overheard their conversation with Artix and William Duvall about a ghost haunting the stage, with her presence there being due to wanting to watch the band and hunt the monsters who haunt the arena.[15]

Z's grungy drip.

Having heard the band's roadies talking about a Banshee in the stage's rafters, Z and the Hero go up there to look for it and they find it just as it finds them. Z offer to help the Banshee but it roars on their faces before disappearing and scaring Z for a moment.[16]

After they gather the remains of songs about fear, insecurity, envy and greed from the undead on the arena, the Hero and Z find out the undead had been collecting the songs for The Unseeing, a powerful vampire who intends to use the songs to drain the life out of the audience.[17] The Hero deals with The Unseeing and Z instructs them to ask Alice in Chains for advice on how to bring back the undead audience to life using the collected songs. After being told that they should conquer their fear, insecurity, envy and greed and that the way is different for every person,[18] the Hero and Z ponder on how to do that until lycans appear on the arena, looking to tear through the crowd.[19]

As they fight to stop the lycans, the Hero and Z realize what they need to bring the songs back to life: courage to fight fear,[20] passions to melt away insecurity,[21] conviction to stop envy[22] and persistence against greed.[23] The lycans' leader then comes in to stop them, Eurythane, a ghostly werepyre.[24]

With Eurythane defeated, the Hero, Cysero and Galanoth enjoy the show together until ghosts appear in the air. Z alerts the Banshee is now trying to pull the arena into the Underworld and they must hurry to defeat it.[25]

Z devises a plan to defeat the Banshee with a musical axe to play the tunes with, and they craft it with parts taken from the ghosts the Hero defeats, it draws the attention of the Reaper Of Dis Chord who wants to bring the songs to the Underworld but it too is defeated.[26] With the Axe of Songs completed the Hero fights the Ghost of Songs Unsung with a guitar solo. Alice in Chains thanks them for everything and informs the Ghost is now joining them in tour, she's a huge fan.[27]

Trivia[]

  • Z, like all other Shadowslayers, is a parody of Vampire Hunter D, eponymous protagonist of a series of novels that got adapted into anime films.
  • In the original AdventureQuest, Z's real name is Buffy, a reference to the tv show Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It is unknown if that is her real name in the AdventureQuest Worlds universe.
  • Her sword is the Shadow Slayer Sword.
  • In an earlier design, Shadowslayer Z used to have cleavage on her outfit, as seen in a design notes post. It got covered up in the final release.[28]
